Mercredi 23 novembre 2011, Barbet Schroeder était l’invité des 13e rencontres cinémas d’Europe à Aubenas. Il a parlé longuement de ses films et échangé sur les thèmes qui sous tendent ses réalisations avec un public particulièrement attentif, au cours d’une soirée animée par par Guillemette Odicino, journaliste à Télérama. En effet, la carrière de ce réalisateur globe-trotter, qui se définit plus comme artisan que comme artiste, a été prolixe et internationale.

Après une enfance en Colombie, Barbet Schroeder est à Paris et participe aux Cahiers du cinéma. Il fonde avec Eric Rohmer la Société de production et de distribution, « Les films du Losange », qui produira les films d’Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Jean Eustache, Rainer- Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders…
Ses premiers films sont « More » (1969) et « La vallée » (1972) - avec des bandes originales signées Pink Floyd - en phase avec l’époque, qui prennent pour thème la recherche de la liberté dans la culture hippie.
Aux Etats-Unis, il réalise de nombreux films dont « Barfly » (1987), d’après Charles Bukowski et avec Mickey Rourke, « JF partagerait appartement » (1992), un thriller avec Bridget Fonda, « Before and after » (1996), un drame familial avec Meryl Streep et Liam Neeson…
